Fabric Bow Tutorial

Materials 

- Cotton fabric
- Batting
- Matching thread
- 2" D-ring or fabric bias/ribbon loop for hanging
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- Pins or clips 

Cutting Guide 

Cut one front, one back, and one batting piece for each of the following: 

Piece| Size
Center| 5½" × 2½"
Top Loop| 32" × 6"
Tail| 36" × 6"

For Directional Fabrics ONLY:
Note: This extra step is only needed for directional prints (one with a definite top and bottom). For non-directional or all-over prints, cut the Tail as one continuous 36" × 6" piece according to the directions above and skip to the Cutting the Tail V-Notch section. 

If you're using a directional fabric, you'll need to modify the Tail piece so both sides of the finished bow face the correct direction.

How to:

-Instead of cutting one top 36" × 6" Tail piece, cut one 37" × 6" strip.
-Cut that strip in half to create two 18½" × 6" pieces.
-Rotate one piece 180° so the print runs in the same direction as the other and place right sides together.
-Sew the two short ends together at the “top” of the design using a 1/4 seam allowance. Once sewn, your Tail piece will finish at approximately 36" long.
-Continue cutting the Tail V-Notch and Assembling the bow as described below. 

***Don't worry about the seam! Once the bow is assembled, the seam will be hidden beneath the center wrap, but both sides of the tail will now appear seamless while the print remains facing upright on both sides. 

Cutting the Tail V-Notch:

-After cutting your Tail piece (or assembling your directional Tail), fold the Tail in half lengthwise like a hot dog bun.
-Starting at the folded edge, measure approximately 3 inches up from the bottom.
-Cut diagonally from bottom outer corner toward that mark on the fold. When you unfold the Tail, both ends will have matching fishtail points.

 

***Tip: Cutting all layers (top fabric, back fabric, and batting) at the same time ensures the V-notch is perfectly centered and symmetrical.

Assembly Instructions

 

Step 1 – Layer

 

For each of the 3 pieces (Top Loop, Tail, and Center) layer in this order:

 

1. Front fabric (right side up)

2. Back fabric (right side down, so that right sides are facing each other)

3. Batting on the outside

 

Pin or clip all layers together.

Step 2 – Sew

 

Top Loop & Tail

 

- Sew around all four sides using your preferred seam allowance.

- Leave a 3-inch opening for turning.

 

*** Tip: Placing the opening near the center helps hide it during assembly.

 

Center

 

- Sew one long side, one short side, and the second long side. 

- Leave one short end open for turning.

Step 3 – Turn & Press

 

Before turning:

 - Trim the corners close to the stitching.

- Clip into the V of the tail without cutting through your stitches.

 

-Turn all pieces right side out.

-Use a turning tool to gently push out the corners.

-Press flat with an iron.

Step 4 – Finish

 

Tail

 

Topstitch around the entire piece, closing the turning opening.

 *** Tip: Leave needle down when turning your corners to insure a tight straight line.

 

Top Loop

 

-Topstitch around the entire piece.

-Overlap the short ends approximately ½ inch.

-Sew together securely using a zigzag stitch for added strength.

 

Center

 

*** Topstitching is optional.

 

Before closing the opening, insert the center in either:

- a 2" D-ring

- OR a hanging loop measuring about 5 inches long

 

-Fold the rough ends in (like you would when closing an opening).

-Place the open end with the other short end.

-Sew together so the loop is secured in the Center.

Step 5 – Assemble the Bow

 

-Find the center of the Top Loop and Tail.

-Place the Tail behind the Top Loop.

-Slide both pieces through the Center piece.

-Adjust the gathers until the bow is full and even.

-Fluff the loops and tails until you're happy with the final shape.

Helpful Tips

 

  • Press each piece after turning for crisp, professional-looking results.
  • Medium- to heavyweight fabrics such as quilting cotton, canvas, duck cloth, or outdoor fabric create a fuller, more structured bow. 
  • Add wired ribbon to the tails for extra shape and longer-lasting fullness.
  • Use different coordinating fabrics for the front and back to create a reversible bow with two beautiful looks in one.
