โIn with the new and out with the oldโ is cool and all... but that's never really been my style.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE decorating for a new season. There's something about fall that makes me want to pull out the pumpkins, light a candle or making a simmer pot to make the house smell amazing, and add a little extra cozy everywhere I can.
But I don't think a new season means you need a whole new house.
Actually, I like doing the opposite.
I love keeping the main pieces in my home old and decorating around them.
Give me an old piece of furniture with a story. Give me a brass candlestick that looks like it could've belonged to someone's grandma. And then let me stick something completely whimsical next to it or even on it!
That's my kind of decorating.
Your Home Doesn't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's
I think sometimes we get so caught up in what's โinโ that we forget we're the ones who actually have to live in our homes.
Every season, there are new colors we're supposed to love. New decorations we supposedly need. New trends that suddenly make everything we bought two years ago feel outdated.
But why?
Why should we have all-new decor all year round?
I absolutely understand wanting to make each season feel special. I do too! But instead of trying to completely change your home every few months, what if you just added things that make it feel a little more like you?
This weekend at a festival, someone stopped at my booth and looked at my potholders.
She told me:
โI love your potholders, but I'm just not into chickens. I like what a lot of other people just don't. I might be a little weird for it, but it's just my style.โ
And y'all...
I understood that in my soul.
Because SAME.
Honestly, that's a huge part of why I started making things for my own home in the first place.
I don't want my house to look exactly like everyone else's house.
I want someone to walk in and see something that makes them stop and say, โOkay... where did you get THAT?โ
I want old things.
I want handmade things.
I want things my kids have made.
I want something a little ridiculous sitting next to something beautiful.
I want pieces with stories.
And yes, apparently I want chickens. ๐๐
Let Fall Be a Fresh Start
So as you're pulling out your fall decorations this year, don't worry so much about whether everything matches.
Don't worry about whether your decorations are what's currently trending.
And please don't feel like you need to throw everything out and start over just because a new season rolled around.
Keep the old brass candlestick.
Keep Grandma's dish.
Keep that weird little decoration that makes absolutely no sense to anyone else but makes you smile every time you walk past it.
Then add a pumpkin beside it.
Throw a handmade pillow on the couch.
Hang the ridiculous chicken potholder in the kitchen.
Or don't โ apparently chickens aren't everyone's thing. Who knew? ๐
The point isn't what you decorate with.
The point is creating a home that feels like the people who live there.
So whether you love chickens or couldn't care less about them, whether you ever buy something from Cluck & Stitches or not, I'm giving you one challenge as we head into this new season:
Make your home unapologetically YOU.
Fill it with things you love. Mix the old with the new. Add a little whimsy. Ignore a trend or two.
Because your home doesn't need to look like everyone else's.
It should look like yours.
Creating a little whimsy, one stitch at a time. ๐๐งต
